2016-2017 was the third year of a five year tender for Kendal BID, In this year nearly £160k was collected from businesses (for accounting terms this is more as monies collected spilled over from the second year). Other revenue, from project grants amounted to more than £30k.

Kendal’s priorities can be summarised as the 4Cs:

A Confident Kendal
A Clean Kendal
A Convenient Kendal
A Competitive Kendal

In Kendal BID’s third year, Confident and Competitive had an overall budget of £30,000. This helped fund:

  • The continued support of SWIPII – a loyalty card scheme. SWIPII gives smaller businesses some of the loyalty, power and advantages that many larger businesses enjoy at a corporate level and currently has over half the population of Kendal regularly using the card and visits to smaller businesses at over 123,000! businesses are able to target their customers directly, which is something they have never being able to do previously without a lot of hard work and extra expense.
    Social media continues to be key and we continue to grow kendal Mintcake and more on Face book, Twitter and Instagram with the help of our social media dedicated person.
  • Festivals and events in 2016 and 2017 remain a key element of BID, providing over £25k of funding in addition to joint marketing and promotions. We also carried out some independent research to ascertain if funding festivals was still a priority for businesses. The conclusion was that although some funded festivals did not provide the direct economic impact that bricks and mortar businesses wanted, those businesses still felt it should remain a BID priority. BID has changed its conditions of funding to reflect the findings.

Clean, Safe and Attractive had a budget of £34k. This helped fund:

  • Kendal Branding (funded and participated in) assumed by Kendal Futures, has meant for the first time that Kendal has its own brand.
  • In Christmas 2016, Kendal BID organised the further extension of Christmas lights into Allhallows and Kirkland. The infrastructure was completed to enable hanging baskets and Christmas trees to be fitted if wanted.
    Kendal BID also supported and fitted 20 secure bike boxes in the town and three additional bus shelters- these have subsequently been gifted to partners to ensure their long term maintenance.
  • The Free Park and Ride was repeated, but at the request of the Board the timings were changed to realise a more concentrated (and cheaper) service based on the peak periods from previous years. Unfortunately, this had the effect of confusing the general public and fewer people used the service. The Board is reviewing its options for 2017.

Convenient and Competitive

  • The Kendal Gift Card was launched in 2016, with over 140 businesses now accepting the card including major names such as Booths, Boots, Mountain warehouse and pizza Express, is moving slower than we expected but we will be driving this forward over the next year.
  • The Kendal leaflets, provided by Kendal Town Council, Kendal BID has supported these successful leaflets financially in addition to providing support and finance for the www.visit-kendal.co.uk website.
  • In early 2016, Kendal BID successfully competed to become one of the UK’s Healthy Highstreets. The scheme helped BID to communicate with the larger businesses in the town, it also meant that Boots has now joined the Kendal Gift Card scheme.

Looking Forward…

2017/2018 is set to be really exciting (to name but a few):

  • the continuation of Swipii
  • the enhancement of the Kendal Gift Card
  • the launch of the visit-kendal website
  • a host of activities across the Summer to encourage people to travel around the town
  • continued funding of exciting festivals and events
  • continued enhancement of social media
  • preparation for an ice rink in Christmas 2018
